The Benefits of Visiting a Hand Therapist
It’s hard to imagine going a single day without using your hands and arms – even now, you’re likely scrolling down a phone screen with your fingertip, or you’ve got your palm resting on the computer mouse. So, when something happens to our hands, it can cause some serious issues – and it should be treated by an experienced medical professional.
Commonly people think a Hand Therapist just treats hand injuries and hand pain. This is not true. Hand Therapists are experts in the treatment of injuries and pain from the shoulder to the fingertip. If you’ve experienced an injury to your shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, thumb or fingers, or you’re experiencing unexplained pain, you should consider visiting an expert hand therapist.
What happens during a hand therapy session?
During your initial consultation, your therapist will ask you a series of questions to explore the origins of your injury or pain. Coming into your appointment with a clearer idea of the timeline of your injury will help them make a clearer diagnosis and assist their treatment plan. Some information to consider when coming in for your appointment is:
- When did the injury occur? (e.g. days, weeks, months) Leaving the injury for a few weeks will impact your recovery so get to the Hand Therapist quickly.
- What sort of force caused the injury? (e.g. a fall, a vehicle crash, sports injury or dislocation, bumped your hand)
- Is it specific to a certain area? (e.g. shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, fingers, thumb, palm, knuckles)
- Is the pain triggered/exacerbated by any particular activity? (e.g. writing, playing sport, rowing, marking, gripping, gym, yoga, push-ups, throwing, typing)
What qualifications does a hand therapist have?
When you’re choosing a clinic to receive hand therapy, it’s important that you do a bit of research into the therapists who will be treating you. Your hand therapist should have studied and completed physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or post-graduate hand therapy degree at a recognised institution. Many hand therapists will also have sat a Certification in Hand Therapy exam and be members of the Australian Hand Therapy Certification Board.
